THE LARRY WALLACE BAND WITH JIM BROCK
Bluegrass Unlimited [November 2007 Issue]Cedar Creek Records CCR-CD-0806
From the state of Mississippi comes a vibrant group headed by banjoist Larry Wallace. Other members are guitarist Alan Sibley (BU, July 2007), Lyle Meador (mandolin), and Cory Burton (bass). Of special interest is the presence of fiddler Jim Brock who is best remembered for his association with Jim & Jesse. The 13 songs are standard fare bluegrass including "Roll On Buddy, Roll On," "I'd Like To Be Sixteen Again," and "Blue Grass Stomp." However, they are performed at a skill level rarely encountered. One particular entry is Monroe Fields yuletide tune "It's Time To Hear Those Jingle Bells Again." That performance alone is enough to make this album an ideal stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday season. (Cedar Creek Records, 1420 Cedar Creek Lane, Starkville, MS 39759.)

THE LARRY WALLACE BAND WITH JIM BROCK
Cedar Creek Records
BY ROBERT STEELMAN
The Larry Wallace Band has produced a solid traditional bluegrass recording. Larry Wallace holds the record of being Jimmy Martin’s longest enduring banjo picker. Listening to this CD makes the reason for that longevity quite obvious. The band is made up of some very talented pickers: Lyle Meador on mandolin, Alan Sibley on guitar, Cory Burton on bass, and Jim Brock on fiddle. Most of the tunes on this project are fairly well-known by bluegrass fans, but they aren’t often delivered with the energy they put into it. Roll On Buddy, Roll On is a solid, hard-driving number. Wallace pays tribute to his old bossman with a good version of I’d Like To Be Sixteen Again. Jim Brock offers some fine fiddling – most notably on a revival of the old fiddlers’ favorite Rubber Dolly. BMP

LARRY WALLACE with JIMMY MARTIN - SUNNY MOUNTAIN BANJO
Gusto Records - Nashville, Tennessee - GT-0628-2
This recording features Wallace's banjo playing, but as the title suggests, it is also an instrumental recording of Jimmy Martin's style of Bluegrass.....The result is a well-played set of driving, up-tempo tunes that are not for the faint-hearted or timid.....The consistently good tone that Wallace gets from his banjo on the fast-paced renditions is remarkable......If you're looking for an album of solid, straight-ahead Bluegrass instrumentals, get this album and hold on!
